The Story of the Shepherd Boy

In the heart of the captivating rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His being was essentially unadulterated, simple yet virtuous. His only responsibility was essentially to look after his herd of ewes.

Their soft bleating and the rustling of the breezes through the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day in day, watching over his charges imbued in him a feeling of tranquil contentment.

But, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. During one such occasion from sheer boredom, the shepherd boy orchestrated a mischievous plan.

Stories of predators hunting on sheep had been around for a while in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a trick on the inhabitants.

One afternoon he dashed into the village shouting “Wolf! A wolf is preying on my sheep!” The terrified villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but found no beast.

The boy laughed at the confusion on their faces. This game continued for a few more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But read more this time, no one responded.

Frustrated and alone, the boy struggled against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he went back to the village only to be met with a lesson on honesty and the results of crying wolf.

The story of this shepherd boy has been passed down generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the importance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the perils of crying wolf. Moreover, it highlights how trust once violated, is hard to reclaim. It's a story as pertinent today as it was anciently.
